CSD registration: a guide to the Central Supplier Database
CSD registration puts a business on the Central Supplier Database, National Treasury's free online register of suppliers to government. Organs of state use it to invite quotations and verify bidders, so an unregistered supplier is usually out of the running. This guide, from Arke Technologies in Johannesburg, covers registration, login, requirements and reports.

What is the Central Supplier Database?
Last reviewed: September 2026.
The Central Supplier Database (CSD) is National Treasury's single register of suppliers to government, used by national and provincial departments, municipalities, public entities and state-owned entities. The central supplier database for government replaced the separate supplier lists that departments and municipalities once kept. Suppliers could self-register from 1 September 2015, and organs of state began using it from 1 April 2016 (National Treasury, CSD fact sheet). In September 2026 it listed about 1.45 million verified suppliers (csd.gov.za, September 2026).
What is CSD registration, then? It is the process of building one verified supplier profile that every organ of state can use. The central supplier database of National Treasury checks your details automatically: your tax compliance status with SARS, your company registration and directors with the CIPC, identity numbers with the Department of Home Affairs and bank account ownership with the banks. It also screens suppliers against the Register for Tender Defaulters and the database of restricted suppliers, and checks whether directors are government employees. This guide, part of our insights and guides, walks through CSD registration in South Africa from start to finish.

Why CSD registration matters when you sell to government
Quotations. Departments, constitutional institutions and Schedule 3A and 3C public entities must obtain at least three written price quotations from suppliers registered on the CSD for purchases above R2,000 up to R1 million (PFMA SCM Instruction No. 2 of 2021/22).
Tax verification. Municipalities verify bidders' tax compliance status through the CSD (MFMA Circular 90, January 2018).
Bids. Bid documents ask for your CSD supplier number or registration report, and evaluators check your record before they award.
Payment. Your bank account is verified on the CSD. The CSD advises adding banking details early, because verification can take up to four days and an unverified account delays payment.
Provincial registers. Some provinces and entities keep their own evidence registers on top of the CSD. The Western Cape Supplier Evidence Bank, for example, draws its supplier information from the CSD and uses the same MAAA number (Western Cape Government).
The CSD is not a tender portal: most government tenders are advertised on the eTender Publication Portal and on buyers' own websites. Our guide to PFMA, MFMA and ICT procurement explains the thresholds and rules behind these checks.
CSD registration requirements
Before you register on the central supplier database, gather the following. Most items are numbers rather than uploads, because the CSD fetches company and tax details directly from the CIPC and SARS:
a valid email address and a cellphone number that can receive one-time PINs by SMS;
identity numbers for the person registering and for each director, member or owner;
the business's registration number: a CIPC number for a company or close corporation, a trust number, or a Department of Social Development number for a non-profit organisation;
at least one SARS tax reference (income tax, PAYE or VAT), with your tax affairs in order;
a bank account in the business's name, with its branch code;
physical and postal addresses, including the municipality and, where relevant, the ward;
your industry classification and the commodities you supply, with the areas you deliver to;
your B-BBEE certificate details or sworn affidavit, which is valid for 12 months from the date it is commissioned;
any accreditations, such as CIDB, SETA or SANAS registrations.
CSD registration requirements differ slightly by supplier type:
| Supplier type | Identification the CSD asks for | Tax reference |
|---|---|---|
| Individual or sole proprietor | South African ID number, or a foreign ID or passport number | Income tax reference; sole proprietors may add PAYE or VAT |
| Company or close corporation | CIPC registration number; directors are returned from the CIPC | Income tax reference; VAT optional |
| Trust | South African or foreign trust registration number | The trust's income tax reference |
| Non-profit organisation | Department of Social Development NPO number | Income tax reference |
| Partnership, joint venture or consortium | ID number of the main partner, or an international securities identification number | PAYE, VAT or income tax reference |
| Foreign company | Foreign company registration number | Optional |

How to register on the Central Supplier Database, step by step
CSD registration online takes place at www.csd.gov.za. The www.csd.gov.za registration form is completed online: the CSD replaced paper registration forms, so there is nothing to print or post. To register a business on the CSD from scratch:
01.
Create an account
Choose Register and enter your email address, name, surname, cellphone number, identification type and number, a password and three security questions.
02.
Activate it
Open the activation email, request a one-time PIN by SMS and enter it.
03.
Add the supplier
Log in, open Supplier Details and add a supplier, selecting its type and sub-type and entering its registration or ID number. For a CIPC company, the legal name, status and directors come back from the CIPC automatically and cannot be edited on the CSD.
04.
Classify the business
Choose the industries you operate in and give each a share of turnover, adding up to 100%.
05.
Add contacts and addresses
At least one contact and one preferred address, including a physical and a postal address.
06.
Add the bank account
Enter the account holder, type, number and branch; the one-time PIN goes to your preferred contact.
07.
Add tax details
Enter an income tax, PAYE or VAT number, and SARS returns your tax compliance status.
08.
Complete directors, associations and commodities
Suppliers not registered with the CIPC enter their directors or members; link associated suppliers, such as a joint venture; select the commodities you supply and where you deliver.
09.
Record B-BBEE and accreditations
Certificate or sworn affidavit details, and any accreditations.
10.
Review and submit
The Overview screen shows what is complete and verified. Submit, and the CSD re-verifies your details and issues your supplier number and unique registration reference number.
The central supplier database registration process is the same whether you sell stationery or servers; what differs is the commodities you select. Choose them carefully, because buyers select suppliers from the CSD to invite for quotations.
CSD login: getting back into your profile
The central supplier database login is on the same site: choose Log in, enter the email address you registered with and your password, complete the captcha, then accept the terms and the fraud-awareness notice. Most problems with CSD login and registration come from access rather than from the site itself:
- Register with a mailbox the business controls, not the personal address of someone who may leave.
- Make a second contact a CSD user, so access does not depend on one person.
- If you forget the password, use the reset option on the login page rather than opening a new account; duplicate accounts cause confusion when buyers verify you.
- Treat any message that asks for payment to activate or renew a CSD profile as a scam; the CSD site carries its own fraud and phishing warnings.
Your CSD registration number and unique registration reference number
What is a CSD registration number? It is the supplier number the CSD issues when you submit a verified profile. It begins with MAAA, which is why buyers often call it the MAAA number, and it appears on your profile and on every CSD report. The CSD unique registration reference number, often written "unique registration reference nr", is issued at the same time and works with the supplier number to open your registration report.
| Number | Format | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| CSD supplier number | MAAA followed by digits | Quotations, bid forms and provincial supplier registers |
| Unique registration reference number | A long reference that the CSD describes as 36 digits | With the supplier number, opens your registration report and lets buyers view your verified record |
If the unique registration reference number is not showing, the profile has not been submitted successfully. Check the Overview screen for outstanding sections or failed verifications, fix them and submit again.
The CSD registration report, and the "certificate"
The CSD registration report is the document most buyers mean when they ask for a CSD certificate. The CSD does not issue a separate registration certificate; the report, called the registration summary, is generated from your verified profile when you request it. To get it:
01.
Log in and choose Reports, then Registration Summary.
02.
Enter your supplier number and unique registration reference number.
03.
Choose View Report, then save or print it as a PDF.
You can also open Supplier Details and select the report icon. Because the report is live, download a fresh copy for each bid: a report that shows an old list of directors or a lapsed tax status can count against you. Buyers can also view your verified record directly, using your supplier number and reference number.
How to do a CSD registration check
A CSD registration check takes a minute once you know where to look:
The Overview screen. It shows the completion status of each section (Completed, In progress or Outstanding), the verification status (Successful, Retry or Failed) and key information: business status, tax compliance status and bank account status.
Restricted suppliers. The "Am I restricted?" check on the CSD home page shows whether a supplier appears on the restricted list.
For buyers. Verify the supplier number and reference number on the CSD, and confirm tax compliance status on the day you award, not only when quotations arrive.
Keeping your CSD profile current
National Treasury expects suppliers to keep their CSD data up to date and to confirm at least once a year that it is still current, and the CSD re-verifies key details against SARS, the CIPC and other sources regularly (National Treasury, CSD fact sheet). Update your profile the same week anything changes: directors (change them at the CIPC first, because the CSD reads them from there), bank account, address, contacts, commodities or B-BBEE evidence. A lapse in tax compliance at SARS shows on the CSD and can stop an award, so resolve it with SARS rather than on the CSD.
Common CSD registration problems and how to fix them
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tax status shows non-compliant | Outstanding returns or debt at SARS | Resolve it with SARS; the CSD picks up the new status |
| Company details or directors are wrong | The CIPC record is out of date | Correct it at the CIPC; details returned from the CIPC cannot be edited on the CSD |
| Bank verification pending or failed | The account holder name differs from the registered name, or a number or branch code is mistyped | Check the details and allow up to four days |
| No one-time PIN arrives | An old or wrong cellphone number on the profile | Update the contact's number; bank changes send the PIN to the preferred contact |
| Unique registration reference number missing | The profile was not submitted, or a verification failed | Clear the outstanding items on the Overview screen and submit |
| Locked out | Registered with a personal email address, or the password is forgotten | Reset the password, keep one profile and add users to it |
What CSD registration costs, and how long it takes
CSD registration is free: National Treasury charges nothing to register or to update a profile. Firms that charge a fee are selling help with the process, not access to the database. With your details ready, you can complete registration in one sitting; the checks against SARS and the CIPC run as you save, and bank verification can take up to four days (National Treasury).
What the CSD does not do
It is not a tender portal. Bids are advertised on the eTender Publication Portal and on buyers' own websites.
It does not replace bid forms. You still complete the SBD or MBD forms each bid requires, including declarations of interest and preference points claims.
It is not B-BBEE verification. The CSD records your certificate or affidavit details, but the evidence still comes from a SANAS-accredited verification agency or a sworn affidavit.
It is not the only register. Some state-owned entities and provinces run their own supplier portals as well, and ICT bids may carry further conditions; see SITA and government IT.
