Managed IT services in South Africa, under one accountable SLA

Managed IT services hand the day-to-day running of your technology to a provider under a service-level agreement. Arke Technologies (Pty) Ltd, based in Johannesburg, runs the service desk, devices, servers, networks, security and cloud for organisations, public bodies and schools across South Africa, priced per user per month and reported monthly.

What are managed IT services?

A working definition of IT managed services: an outside provider takes ongoing responsibility for running and improving your IT estate, for a fixed monthly fee, against response and resolution times written into a contract. That provider is a managed service provider, or MSP. In information technology, an MSP differs from a break-fix supplier in one way a financial director will notice: it is paid to keep things working, not per fault, so its incentives match yours.

The difference between IT services and managed services is therefore mostly commercial. Ad hoc IT services are bought by the hour or by the project when something breaks or changes. A managed service covers a defined scope continuously: monitoring, patching, backups, support requests, and a monthly review that shows what happened and what should change. Many organisations use both: managed IT services and support for day-to-day operations, and quoted projects for upgrades, migrations and new sites.

The managed IT services industry is growing quickly. South Africa's IT services market is forecast to grow from USD 14.7 billion in 2025 to USD 27.0 billion in 2030, and managed security is its fastest-growing segment, at 14.2% a year (Mordor Intelligence). A fast-growing market brings more bidders to every tender, which makes managing service providers well (the contract, the reporting, the exit terms) matter more.

Types of managed IT services we provide

Our IT management services are modular: hand us the whole estate or one part of it, under the same SLA and monthly review.

Hardware comes from Server Hub, our trading division, configured and bench-tested before dispatch, and business fibre and LTE come from Fibre Boyz, our connectivity division. One contract can therefore carry the whole stack. See IT procurement and lifecycle management.

Choosing a service model: fully managed, co-managed, remote or project

IT solutions and managed services come in four common shapes. The right one depends on whether you employ IT staff, how many sites you run and how much control you want to keep.

ModelWhat we runSuitsYour role
Fully managed ITThe whole estate: desk, devices, servers, network, security and cloudOrganisations without an IT department, or replacing an outsourced oneOwns strategy and budget; approves changes
Co-managed ITA defined part: the service desk, security monitoring, servers or projectsCorporate and public-sector IT teams that need capacity or depthKeeps ownership; we work to your processes
Remote managed IT servicesRemote support and monitoring, with on-site visits as set in the SLABranch offices, distributed teams, schools across several campusesA local contact for physical tasks
Project IT servicesA scoped piece of work, quoted per projectMigrations, upgrades, new officesSponsor and sign-off

IT outsourcing covers the fully managed model in depth. Co-managed IT is the most collaborative of the models: your team keeps the relationship with the business and we add hands, tooling and specialist skills. Remote IT support explains how we work without being on site. Smaller organisations should read IT support for small and growing businesses.

How we deliver managed IT services

Every engagement follows the same path, and you see the price before you commit.

  1. Discovery and assessment

We document your devices, servers, licences, networks, applications, suppliers and credentials, test the estate against a security, backup, licensing and support baseline, and rank what we find.

  2. Proposal and SLA

Scope, response and resolution times, exclusions, on-site policy, price per seat and term, in writing before you commit.

  3. Baseline

Onboarding sets the standards we will hold (security baselines, configuration standards, monitoring thresholds and documentation) and records credentials and runbooks before we take over on an agreed date.

  4. Management

We run daily operations: support requests, monitoring, patching, backups and maintenance.

  5. Optimisation

Each monthly service review covers tickets, SLA performance, security, patching and backups, and agrees what changes next.

The tooling is our own. Monitoring checks each computer every 15 minutes and raises faults as tickets automatically, so a ticket can be open before anyone phones. Remote support runs on our own remote-access platform, built on open-source RustDesk, with a management system we own, on our own servers in Johannesburg. A library of standard repairs handles routine faults, and the riskier ones need a recorded human approval before they run. We are building this tooling into Hesper, our IT operations platform, launching in November 2026. You deal with one contract and one accountable team, working on our SLA clock.

Governance and reporting a board can rely on

King IV Principle 12 makes the governing body responsible for technology and information governance, and outsourced IT remains the board's risk. Our reporting gives it evidence rather than reassurance. See King IV and technology governance and IT governance, risk and compliance.

  • Response and resolution targets by priority, in the SLA. Incidents are prioritised P1 to P4, from a critical outage (P1) to a low-impact request (P4), with targets matched to the business impact of downtime and agreed with you.
  • A named service lead who owns your account, with a documented escalation path above them.
  • A monthly service review and written report on tickets, SLA performance, security, patching and backups.
  • ITIL-aligned practice for incident, request, problem and change management. See ITIL and IT service management.
  • Change control. Changes are logged, assessed and approved before they are made, against documented runbooks.
  • Access you can audit. Every remote session is approved and logged, and everyone with access to your systems is bound by confidentiality and our security controls.

Compliance: POPIA, King IV, PFMA and MFMA

A managed service provider sees personal information every working day, in mailboxes, file shares and HR and finance systems. POPIA requires it to be secured, and your contract should say how. We work to controls aligned with ISO/IEC 27001, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and CIS Controls, applied through the baseline, monitoring and access logging above. Our POPIA compliance service goes further where you need a programme rather than controls.

Public-sector clients buy and report under the PFMA or MFMA. We work to those procurement and reporting disciplines and keep documentation ready for audit: asset registers, change records, access logs and SLA reports. In government the same service is usually bought as ICT managed services or ICT services, and our IT services for government and the public sector page covers departments, municipalities and state-owned entities.

Buying managed IT services: RFPs, tenders and procurement documents

Procurement officers need evidence before they sign; we supply it as standard.

  • Level 1 B-BBEE contributor, giving buyers 135% procurement recognition (sworn affidavit available on request).
  • A registered company since 2017 (registration number 2017/386810/07; VAT number 4750287957).
  • Central Supplier Database (CSD) number and SARS tax compliance status, available on request.
  • Company documents and a bank confirmation letter, available on request, and standard bidding documents (SBD forms) completed where a bid requires them.
  • Three ways to buy: our proposal and SLA against your purchase order; a response to your request for quotation; or a response to your RFP or tender.

If you are drafting an RFP for managed IT services, use the SLA headings above as the template for each proposal. Ask every bidder to price the same scope, per seat, over the same term and with the same exclusions, so each proposal compares like for like. Procuring from Arke and our company facts page hold the details procurement teams ask for.

What managed IT services cost in South Africa

Last reviewed: September 2026.

  • R180 to R400 per user per month

published South African managed IT rates (matnet.co.za, September 2026), with some providers listing R450 (MiBOT, September 2026).

  • R550 to R750 an hour, ex VAT

published rates for IT project work (matnet.co.za, September 2026).

  • About R21,054 a month

the average Johannesburg IT support technician's pay (Indeed, September 2026), before leave cover, tools and training.

What moves the price is scope and risk: the number of users and devices; whether the contract covers the desk alone or the whole estate, security and cloud included; on-site requirements and the number of sites; hours of cover; security tooling and licences; and how much legacy equipment needs nursing.

We price managed IT per user (seat) per month, set after an assessment, so the figure reflects your estate rather than a brochure. Project work outside the SLA is quoted per project before it starts. See managed IT pricing and how much managed IT services cost in South Africa.

Why managed IT services? In-house and managed compared

The choice is rarely all or nothing: many larger organisations keep an IT manager and a small team, and buy the rest as a managed service.

Risks of outsourcing IT, and how we prevent them

The risks in outsourcing IT sit in the contract and the handover as much as in the technology.

  • Lock-in. You own your data, credentials and documentation. If you leave, you receive them with the asset register and ticket history, under exit terms written into the SLA from day one.
  • Unchecked remote access. Every session is approved and logged on our own platform, and riskier automated repairs need a recorded human approval.
  • Surprise invoices. Scope and exclusions are in the SLA, and anything outside it is quoted before work starts.
  • Knowledge in one person's head. Runbooks are documented, and a named service lead owns your account.
  • Growth outpacing the provider. Delivery is remote-first, and we hire technicians for experience, education and certifications in step with the contracts we sign, so a new site or department is a change to the SLA, not a new supplier.
  • A messy handover in. We take over from your current provider or team on an agreed date, with credentials, runbooks and an asset register recorded during onboarding.

How to choose among IT services companies in South Africa

Rankings of top IT services companies and ICT solutions companies are easy to find; evidence is harder to come by. Whether you hire an IT company with a national footprint or an IT firm near you, put these six questions to every managed IT services provider on your shortlist, and compare the written answers.

  1. Who answers, and how fast?

Ask for response and resolution times by priority, in writing.

  2. What does the monthly report contain?

    Ask for a sample.

  3. Whose tooling, and where does it run?

Remote access and monitoring should be owned, logged and hosted somewhere you can name.

  4. What is excluded?

    Exclusions decide the real price.

  5. How do we leave?

The exit terms should hand back data, credentials and documentation.

  6. Can you show the procurement documents?

B-BBEE status, tax compliance and company registration, before the shortlist closes.

Our guide on how to choose an IT company in South Africa expands on each question; the same tests apply if MSP consultants run the selection for you.

Where we work and who we serve

Our head office is at 8 Greenstone Place, Stoneridge Office Park, Block A North, First Floor, Greenstone Hill, Johannesburg, 1609, South Africa, in Edenvale on the East Rand, close to OR Tambo International Airport. Because delivery is remote-first, an office in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Makhanda (Grahamstown) or Mbombela (Nelspruit) gets the same service desk, monitoring and monthly review as one in Johannesburg, with on-site work set out in each SLA. See IT services in Johannesburg.

We provide IT services for businesses and design the service around enterprise IT, government and the public sector, schools and education and professional services firms. The full list is on our services page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a managed IT service? Show answer

A managed IT service is ongoing IT operations run by an outside provider for a fixed monthly fee, under a service-level agreement. The provider monitors, maintains and supports your systems and reports on them, instead of charging per fault. At Arke Technologies that means one SLA, a named service lead and a monthly service review with a written report.

What are some examples of managed IT services? Show answer

Common examples are a service desk, device and patch management, server and network management, security monitoring, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace administration, and backup with restore testing. Most providers also offer IT consulting. We deliver all of these, plus hardware through Server Hub and business connectivity through Fibre Boyz, under one contract and one monthly service review.

What is the difference between IT services and managed services? Show answer

IT services are usually bought as needed, by the hour or the project; managed services cover a defined scope continuously for a monthly fee. The practical difference is incentive: a managed provider earns the same fee whether or not things break, so prevention pays. Many organisations combine a managed service with quoted projects for upgrades.

How much do managed IT services cost in South Africa? Show answer

Published South African rates run from about R180 to R400 per user per month (matnet.co.za, September 2026), with some providers listing R450 (MiBOT, September 2026). Scope, sites, hours of cover and security tooling drive the figure. We price per user per month after an assessment, and quote project work separately.

What are the benefits of managed IT services? Show answer

The main benefits are predictable cost, depth of skills, continuous monitoring and accountability you can measure. A managed service gives you a team across the desk, servers, network, security and cloud, without recruiting each role, and a monthly report that shows performance against the SLA. Staff turnover also puts less of your operation at risk.

Is managed IT better than in-house IT? Show answer

Neither is better in every case; the right answer depends on size, complexity and control. In-house staff know the business closely, while a managed service adds depth, tooling and cover during leave. Many larger organisations use co-managed IT, keeping an internal IT manager and buying the service desk, security or projects from us.

What should an RFP for managed IT services include? Show answer

An RFP for managed IT services should define the scope, the user and device count, response and resolution times by priority, exclusions, on-site requirements, reporting, term and exit terms. Ask every bidder to price per seat on the same basis. Include your compliance needs, such as POPIA, PFMA or MFMA reporting, and the procurement documents you require.

Do you provide 24/7 managed IT services? Show answer

Not as standard. Monitoring runs continuously and logs faults as tickets automatically, but human response follows your SLA during our hours: Monday to Friday 08:00–17:00 and Saturday 09:00–13:00 (SAST). Out-of-hours and weekend cover is available by agreement, and we will not sell you a round-the-clock desk we do not staff.
