Device groups
Devices are organised in groups, for example by client, site or department, so a large estate stays manageable from one remote desktop manager rather than a list of saved connections.

Remote desktop software lets an authorised technician see and control a computer from elsewhere. Hesper remote access, for managed service providers and in-house IT teams, builds on open-source RustDesk with a management layer Arke Technologies in Johannesburg owns: device groups, approvals and session logs. It launches in November 2026; early access is open.
Remote desktop software, also called remote access desktop software or remote support software, lets a person use another computer over a network: see its screen, control the mouse and keyboard, move files and restart services without being in the room. IT teams use it for two jobs:
Remote desktop connection software in the narrow sense is different. Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection, built into Windows, signs you in to a Windows computer over the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) as if you sat at it; the computer you reach must run Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education or Windows Server. It suits working on a machine, not helping the person in front of it.

| Option | How it works | Cost | What an organisation must add |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) | Built into Windows; signs a user in to a Windows computer over RDP | Included with Windows Pro and Enterprise | A VPN or gateway with multi-factor authentication, never RDP open to the internet, plus access logs |
| Chrome Remote Desktop | Google's free remote desktop software, used through the Chrome browser with a small host on each computer | Free | A decision on who may use it and on which devices; managed Chrome policy can restrict or block it |
| Subscription remote-support services | Commercial tools brokered through the vendor's cloud | A licence per technician or per concurrent session | Checks on where sessions are relayed and what is logged |
| Self-hosted open source (RustDesk) | Free, open-source software through ID and relay servers you host | Free software; you pay for hosting and administration | Patching, access control and session logging |
| Hesper remote access | RustDesk with a management layer we own: device groups, approvals and session logs | Published at launch, in November 2026 | Your access policy: which groups, which technicians, which approvals |
Chrome remote desktop software is often the first tool people reach for because it is free and quick to set up. For an organisation, the connection is the easy part; the controls around it are the work.

Free remote desktop software, from Chrome Remote Desktop to the RustDesk client, is enough when one person needs occasional access to their own computers. An organisation needs more than a connection: a list of who may reach which device, a record of every session, a way to revoke access the day someone leaves, and a licence that allows commercial use. Some free tools are licensed for personal use only, and an unapproved one on a work laptop is shadow IT with a door into your network.
Free software is not a free service. Someone still hosts, patches, secures and supports it. Our guide to RustDesk for business sets out those running costs.

Hesper is our IT operations platform for managed service providers and in-house IT teams. Its remote access builds on RustDesk, the open-source remote desktop software, and adds a management layer we own:
Devices are organised in groups, for example by client, site or department, so a large estate stays manageable from one remote desktop manager rather than a list of saved connections.
Remote sessions are approved before a technician connects.
A record of every remote session, for your service reviews and your auditors.

Remote access sits beside monitoring every 15 minutes, faults raised as tickets, standard automated repairs gated by recorded human approval, and ticketing tied to SLA clocks. See Hesper monitoring, automation and ticketing.
Hesper is designed around the way our own technicians support clients under SLA, before it is offered to anyone else.
Remote access is the most privileged tool in IT: whoever holds it can see what users see and change what administrators change. That makes it a governance matter as well as a technical one.

Check the licence allows commercial use, and price the whole term: licences, hosting, administration and support.

Deploy through device management, and remove the tools you replace, so there is one door to secure.

the device list, logs and documentation should be yours.
Hesper launches in November 2026, and pricing will be published at launch. Until then, join the early-access list.
If you need governed remote support now, our remote IT support and managed IT services already work this way: our own RustDesk-based platform on our servers in Johannesburg, every session approved and logged, incidents prioritised from P1 (critical outage) to P4 (low-impact request) with targets agreed in your SLA, and a monthly service review.
Arke Technologies (Pty) Ltd is a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor (135% procurement recognition; sworn affidavit available on request); company documents, our CSD supplier number and SARS tax compliance status are available on request. Your devices, data and credentials stay yours: if you leave our managed service, we remove our client software, close our access and hand over the documentation.

Hesper launches in November 2026. It is the IT operations platform for managed service providers and in-house IT teams, built first for our own managed service: remote access with approvals and session logs, monitoring every 15 minutes with faults raised as tickets, standard automated repairs with recorded human approval for the riskier ones, and ticketing tied to SLA clocks. Pricing will be published at launch.
The best remote desktop software is the one that fits your jobs and your controls. For one person reaching their own computer, a free tool is enough. For an organisation, choose on governance: individual accounts, approvals, session logs, where sessions are relayed, commercial licensing and support. Hesper is built around those controls, and it launches in November 2026.
Yes. RustDesk is free, open-source remote desktop software that a business may use under its AGPL-3.0 licence, and Chrome Remote Desktop is free from Google. Check that any licence permits commercial use, then budget for what free software leaves to you: hosting, access control, session logs, patching and the people who support it.
Chrome Remote Desktop encrypts its sessions and suits occasional, personal use, but it is built for individuals rather than managed estates. An organisation should decide who may use it and on which devices, and where Chrome is managed through Google Workspace, set policy to allow or block it. We manage Chrome devices and policy for our clients.
Remote desktop software shows and controls a computer's desktop, while remote access software is the wider term for any way of reaching systems from elsewhere, including VPNs and file access. The terms overlap in practice. Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection signs you in as a user, while remote support tools share the screen of the person already there.
Some can, and that is how spyware and support scams work. We do not deploy hidden remote desktop software: in our managed service every session is approved and logged. Covert access to a colleague's computer also raises POPIA and employment questions. Train staff never to install remote-access software because a caller asks them to.
That is the intent: Hesper builds on RustDesk, whose client runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, and on iPhone and iPad as a controller only. Tell us your mix of Windows 10 and 11, Windows Server and macOS devices when you join the early-access list, and we will confirm coverage for your estate.
