Cloud services in Azure, designed, migrated and managed
Cloud services in Azure are the computing, storage, networking, identity and data services Microsoft runs from its data centres, including regions in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Arke Technologies (Pty) Ltd, in Johannesburg, plans, migrates, secures and manages Microsoft Azure for mid-sized and large organisations, public bodies and schools across South Africa.
What cloud services in Azure include
Microsoft Azure offers hundreds of cloud computing services, and it is one of three public platforms within our cloud services. Most organisations use a core set, and the work lies in configuring, securing and running them well.
| Need | Azure service | What we do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual servers and desktops | Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Virtual Desktop | Size, build, patch and back up; migrate on-prem VMs |
| Serverless code | Azure Functions | Event-driven jobs, integrations and scheduled tasks, billed per execution |
| Databases | Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on VMs | Migrate SQL Server; set backups, geo-replication and access |
| Storage | Blob Storage, Azure Files, Azure Backup | Tiering, immutability and retention |
| Disaster recovery | Azure Site Recovery (ASR) | Replicate servers to a second region; run drills |
| Identity and secrets | Entra ID, Privileged Identity Management, managed identities, Key Vault | Just-in-time admin rights, no secrets in code, key management |
| Networking | Virtual networks, NSGs, Azure Firewall, VPN Gateway, ExpressRoute, Virtual WAN, Network Watcher | Segmentation, private subnets, site links, network performance monitoring |
| APIs and data | API Management, Data Factory, Microsoft Fabric | Secure APIs, data pipelines and orchestration |
| Hybrid | Azure Arc | Manage on-premises and other-cloud servers from Azure |
Azure Functions runs small pieces of code when something happens, such as a file arriving, a message landing or a timer firing, and bills for the execution alone, which makes it natural glue for API integration. For data pipelines, managed Airflow in Azure Data Factory closed to new instances from January 2026, and Microsoft now offers Apache Airflow jobs in Microsoft Fabric; we build new orchestration there or in Data Factory pipelines.
Azure, AWS or Google Cloud?
Amazon Web Services vs Google Cloud vs Azure is the first question most boards ask. All three run South African regions, and each has a natural fit.
| Microsoft Azure | AWS | Google Cloud (GCP) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural fit | Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Windows Server and SQL Server estates | The broadest catalogue; software certified for AWS | New applications, data analytics, Google Workspace estates |
| Main cost levers | Azure Hybrid Benefit reuses eligible Windows Server and SQL Server licences; reservations and savings plans | Savings Plans and Reserved Instances; bring-your-own-licence on dedicated hosts | Sustained-use and committed-use discounts |
| Migration tooling | Azure Migrate | AWS Application Migration Service | Migrate to Virtual Machines |
| Disaster recovery | Azure Site Recovery | AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery | Backup and DR Service |
| South African regions | Johannesburg, with Cape Town as its pair | Cape Town | Johannesburg |
To compare AWS to Azure fairly, compare the whole cost of your workloads, licences and skills, not list prices. AWS and Microsoft Azure increasingly work together: Azure Multicloud Interconnect and AWS Interconnect now link the two platforms privately at up to 100 Gbps, with Azure's side in preview (Server Hub, September 2026 (opens serverhub.co.za)). Our AWS and Google Cloud pages cover the other two. Where Azure is not the right answer, we say so.

Azure cloud migration: strategy and steps
The usual cloud migration strategies on Azure are rehost (move as is), replatform (move onto a managed service such as Azure SQL), refactor or rearchitect (change the code), replace (move to SaaS), and retire or retain. Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework sets out the same choices. Moving to Azure cloud then follows five steps, whether you are migrating on-prem servers or another cloud's workloads.
01.
Discover and assess
Azure Migrate discovers on-prem servers (VMware, Hyper-V and physical) and servers running on AWS or Google Cloud, maps dependencies and sizes each target.
02.
Build the landing zone
Azure landing zones, first published as the enterprise-scale architecture, set up management groups, policy, identity, networking and logging before workloads arrive. Virtual networks, NSGs and managed identities are defined as code in Terraform or Bicep, so they can be reviewed, rebuilt and handed over.
03.
Pilot
A low-risk workload moves first, to prove the design, the runbooks and the recovery procedure.
04.
Migrate in waves
Azure Migrate replicates each VM and cuts it over in an agreed window with a rollback path. Databases move with Azure's database migration tools (on-prem SQL Server to Azure SQL Managed Instance or Azure SQL Database), web apps with the App Service migration assistant, and file servers with Storage Migration Service in Windows Server.
05.
Operate and optimise
We run the environment under an SLA, report monthly and adjust sizing, reservations and storage tiers as usage settles.
The same discipline covers Azure-to-Azure migration between regions, subscriptions or tenants after a merger, and migrations from AWS to Azure or GCP to Azure. It also works in reverse: AWS's migration service can migrate an Azure VM to AWS, so leaving remains possible. See cloud migration for the full method.
Azure disaster recovery: Site Recovery, strategy and cost
Azure Site Recovery (ASR) replicates servers continuously to a second location and fails them over when the primary is lost: on-premises VMware, Hyper-V or physical servers to Azure, or Azure to Azure between regions. It is the core of most Azure DR solutions and of DR as a service on Azure. Site Recovery can carry a migration too, although Azure Migrate is now Microsoft's recommended tool for that.
An Azure DR strategy starts with two numbers for each system: how much data you can afford to lose and how long it may be down. Backup and restore suits systems that can wait a day; Site Recovery suits those that must return within hours; active-active designs suit the few that cannot stop.
Azure Site Recovery pricing is per protected instance per month, with each instance free for its first 31 days, plus replica storage, and compute only during a failover or drill. Azure Migrate discovery and assessment carry no charge, and its server replication is free for the first 180 days per machine (Microsoft pricing pages, September 2026). We run failover drills on a schedule written into your SLA and report the result; see backup and disaster recovery.

Cyber security and identity management in Azure
Identity management in Azure. Entra ID with multi-factor authentication and conditional access; Azure Privileged Identity Management for time-limited, approved administrator rights; managed identities instead of stored passwords and keys.
Network. Azure NSG rules on every subnet; private subnets with no default outbound internet access, which becomes the default for new virtual networks under Azure API versions released after 31 March 2026 (Microsoft Learn, September 2026); private endpoints for platform services; Azure Firewall where traffic needs inspection.
Encryption key management. Key Vault for keys, secrets and certificates, customer-managed keys where policy demands them, rotation and access logs.
Information protection. The Azure Rights Management Service behind Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels encrypts documents and email wherever they travel.
APIs. Azure API Management (APIM) security: token validation, rate limits and private networking in front of back-end services.
Monitoring. Microsoft Defender for Cloud posture checks, Microsoft Sentinel for security events, and Network Watcher for network performance monitoring in Azure.

What Azure costs, and what drives it
Last reviewed: September 2026.
Virtual machine size and the hours each runs; storage volume, tier and snapshots.
Data transferred out of Azure, and network services such as gateways and firewalls.
Licences: Azure Hybrid Benefit can reuse eligible Windows Server and SQL Server licences.
Disaster-recovery standby, backup retention and Site Recovery instances.
Commitments: reservations and savings plans cut the cost of steady workloads.
The exchange rate, because much Azure pricing is set in US dollars.
Microsoft's pricing calculator estimates consumption; it leaves out the migration project and months of running old and new side by side. We quote migration as a project and management under your SLA, after an assessment, with the monthly cost model on paper first. Cloud cost optimisation keeps spend in check afterwards.
Governance, compliance, procurement and continuity
One SLA: incidents prioritised P1 (critical outage) to P4 (low-impact request), with response and resolution targets agreed to your business impact; a monthly service review and report; logged, approved changes; ITIL-aligned practice.
POPIA: data kept in South African regions unless you decide otherwise, with every copy recorded; section 72 governs transfers abroad. King IV Principle 12 and PFMA or MFMA reporting are supported by architecture, change and access records kept ready for audit.
Procurement: Level 1 B-BBEE contributor, giving 135% procurement recognition (sworn affidavit available on request); CSD number, SARS tax compliance status and company documents available on request; SBD forms completed where required. Azure consumption can sit in your own subscription, while our migration project and SLA are bought against your purchase order or a tender response; see procuring from Arke.
Continuity: the tenant, subscriptions, data and credentials are yours; we work through named, logged accounts and document as we go. Adding a workload or region is a change to the SLA, and exit terms are written in from the first day.
Frequently asked questions
What are cloud services in Azure? Show answer Hide answer
Cloud services in Azure are the virtual servers, databases, storage, networking, identity, security and data services that Microsoft rents from its data centres, billed by use. Organisations use them to run applications without owning servers, to recover from disasters and to extend Microsoft 365 and Windows Server estates. Azure runs regions in Johannesburg and Cape Town.
What is Azure Site Recovery, and what does it cost? Show answer Hide answer
Azure Site Recovery is Microsoft's disaster-recovery service: it replicates servers to a second location and fails them over when the primary site is lost. It is priced per protected instance per month, free for each instance's first 31 days, plus replica storage and compute during failovers (Microsoft pricing, September 2026).
Is Azure Migrate free? Show answer Hide answer
Largely, yes. Azure Migrate's discovery and assessment carry no charge, and server replication is free for the first 180 days per machine, after which a monthly fee per replicating instance applies (Microsoft pricing, September 2026). You still pay for the storage and data transfer that replication uses, and for the migration work itself.
AWS vs Azure: which is better? Show answer Hide answer
Neither is better for everyone. Azure usually suits organisations built on Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Windows Server and SQL Server, because licences and identity carry across. AWS offers the broadest catalogue and suits software certified for it. We compare both, and Google Cloud, on your workloads, licences, skills and South African region needs.
How do we migrate on-premises SQL Server to Azure? Show answer Hide answer
Choose the target first: Azure SQL Database for modern applications, SQL Managed Instance for near-complete compatibility, or SQL Server on an Azure VM where full control is needed. Then assess compatibility, migrate with Azure's database migration tools, test the application and cut over in a planned window, keeping the source available for rollback.
What are Azure Functions used for? Show answer Hide answer
Azure Functions runs short pieces of code in response to events, such as a file upload, a queue message, an HTTP request or a schedule, without a server to manage. It suits integrations, document processing, notifications and scheduled jobs. You pay for executions and resources used, which keeps the cost of occasional work low.
Do we need an Azure consultant? Show answer Hide answer
Usually, yes, for a migration, a landing zone or a security design, because experienced help costs less than the rework it prevents. Judge an Azure infrastructure or security consultant on evidence: a named, accountable team, architecture documentation you keep, work done in your own tenant, an SLA for running it, and clear exit terms. That is how we work.
