Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services, designed, built and managed

Google Cloud, also called Google Cloud Platform or GCP, is Google's public cloud: computing, storage, databases, analytics and AI, paid for by use and available from a Johannesburg region. Arke Technologies (Pty) Ltd, in Johannesburg, designs, migrates, secures and manages Google Cloud for mid-sized and large organisations, public bodies and schools across South Africa.

What is Google Cloud Platform (GCP)?

Google Cloud computing means renting infrastructure of the kind Google runs its own products on: virtual machines, serverless platforms, storage, databases, networks, analytics and AI, billed by the second, the gigabyte or the request. GCP is one of the three public platforms in our cloud services, and the one we build on most. Most organisations need only a handful of the Google Cloud platform services below; the table shows what each is for and what we do with it.

NeedGoogle Cloud serviceWhat we do with it
Virtual serversCompute Engine (GCE), Linux or Windows ServerSize, build, patch and back up; SSH and RDP through Identity-Aware Proxy, with no ports open to the internet
Serverless apps and APIsCloud Run, Cloud Run functions (formerly Cloud Functions), Google App EngineContainers and event-driven jobs that scale to zero when idle

Google Cloud in South Africa: the Johannesburg region

Google Cloud has run a region in Johannesburg, africa-south1, since January 2024, with three zones (Google Cloud, September 2026). Not every product is offered there, so we check each service against the region before designing around it.

Behind the region are the servers of Google itself: Google designs its own servers and network, and says Google Cloud runs on the same infrastructure as Search, Gmail and YouTube. Under the shared-responsibility model, Google secures the data centres and hardware; identities, network rules and data inside your projects are yours, and ours when we manage them.

POPIA section 72 governs sending personal information outside South Africa, and section 19 requires reasonable security safeguards. We keep personal information in the Johannesburg region unless you decide otherwise, encrypt it and record where every copy lives; see POPIA compliance.

Hosting with Google Cloud: websites, apps and APIs

The Google Cloud platform hosting options, and when we choose each:

OptionSuitsWatch for
Firebase Hosting and App HostingStatic sites and Next.js or Angular web apps, served through a global content delivery networkBuilt for modern frameworks, not for WordPress
Cloud RunContainerised web apps and APIs whose traffic rises and fallsA cold start after idle, unless one instance is kept warm
Google App Engine (AppEngine in older code)Existing App Engine applications; it was Google's first cloud platform serviceNew builds usually suit Cloud Run, which runs any container
Compute EngineWordPress, legacy applications and Windows Server workloadsServers still need patching, backup and monitoring

A company website and email with no application behind them usually suit our website and email hosting better than Google hosting. Google Cloud earns its place when the site is an application with users, data and integrations; see web application development.

Google databases, Google Cloud Storage and Firebase

The database is the decision that costs most to reverse, so we settle it early:

  • Cloud SQL runs managed MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQL Server, with automated backups, point-in-time recovery and, for production, a high-availability standby in a second zone. Most business applications belong here, and Google Cloud MySQL and PostgreSQL workloads move in through Database Migration Service.
  • AlloyDB suits demanding PostgreSQL workloads; Spanner suits databases that must scale across regions.
  • Firestore and the Realtime Database are the Firebase database options: app data that syncs to phones and browsers in real time, including offline.
  • BigQuery is for analysis, not for running transactions; see data, analytics and business intelligence.

Google Cloud Storage (GCS) keeps files as objects in buckets, priced by storage class:

Storage classMinimum storage periodSuits
StandardNoneWebsites, app files and active data
Nearline30 daysData read about once a month; recent backups
Coldline90 daysData read about once a quarter; disaster-recovery copies
Archive365 daysRecords kept for compliance and rarely read

Firebase storage (Cloud Storage for Firebase) is the same service, with Firebase security rules deciding what each app user may read and write. Firebase also provides sign-in, hosting and Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notifications. A Firebase API key identifies a project but does not protect it; security rules and App Check do, and we write and test both.

Google Cloud solutions we build

We build our own systems on Google Cloud, and AtlasOS runs on it in production, so our designs, runbooks and cost models come from a platform we operate ourselves.

How we deliver Google Cloud

  1. Assess

Discovery and an assessment of what you run, with servers measured and costs modelled, then a written proposal.

  2. Build the landing zone

Organisation, folders, projects, IAM groups, networks, logging, billing account and budgets, in your organisation's name and defined as code, so the design is documented and repeatable.

  3. Pilot

A low-risk workload first, to prove the design, the runbooks and the cost model.

  4. Migrate in waves

Migrate to Virtual Machines (formerly Migrate for Compute Engine) for servers, Database Migration Service for databases and Storage Transfer Service for files, each with a rollback until validated; see cloud migration.

  5. Operate under an SLA

Monitoring, patching, backups through Google's Backup and DR Service, access reviews and a monthly service review; recovery design sits with backup and disaster recovery.

Security and operations on Google Cloud

  • Identity. Cloud Identity, Google Workspace or Entra ID federation; access granted to groups, multi-factor sign-in, least-privilege IAM roles and no downloaded service-account keys.
  • Guardrails. Organisation policies that block public buckets, external IP addresses and resources outside approved regions.
  • Network. Private VPCs, firewall rules, Private Service Connect, Cloud Armor in front of public applications and Cloud VPN to your offices.
  • Encryption. Google encrypts data at rest by default; Cloud KMS customer-managed keys where your policy requires them.
  • Administration. The gcloud command-line tool and Google Cloud Shell, with every change made as code under change control. Google's samples in the GoogleCloudPlatform repositories on GitHub are a starting point, never a production design.
  • Monitoring. Cloud Monitoring alerts, plus our own monitoring, which checks each server every 15 minutes and logs faults as tickets automatically, prioritised P1 to P4 under your SLA.
  • Assurance. Penetration testing within Google's acceptable use policy; see cybersecurity services.

Google Cloud pricing: what drives the bill

Last reviewed: September 2026.

Google Cloud pricing is pay-as-you-go, and Google publishes its price list in US dollars, so the exchange rate moves your bill in rand. Google Cloud platform pricing depends on:

  • Compute: machine type and hours, billed per second after the first minute. Sustained-use discounts apply automatically on some machine families, committed-use discounts reward one- or three-year commitments, and Spot VMs cost less for work that can be interrupted.
  • Storage: Google Cloud storage pricing is per gigabyte per month, by class and region, plus operations, retrieval and early-deletion fees on colder classes; operations and data leaving the platform often cost as much as the gigabytes stored.
  • Network: data sent to the internet or between regions is charged; incoming data is free.
  • Databases, licences and support: instance size and any high-availability standby; Windows Server and SQL Server licence charges; Google's own support plans.

Google's pricing calculator estimates consumption before you commit, and budgets send alerts but do not stop spending. We quote a migration as a project and management under your SLA, after an assessment, and publish no hourly rates. Cloud cost optimisation keeps spend in check afterwards.

Google Cloud, Google Workspace and Google Photos are not the same

Google Cloud is Google's platform for building and running systems. Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Meet and Docs) is its productivity suite, licensed per user; we supply, migrate and manage it through our Google Workspace service. People looking for "my Google Cloud", or their photos on Google Cloud, usually mean the personal storage behind Google Photos and Drive. Keep organisational records in shared drives or buckets you own, so they survive a resignation and fall under your retention policy. Old names confuse too: Google Cloud Messaging is now Firebase Cloud Messaging.

Choosing a Google Cloud provider: partner status and GCP certifications

Google sells Google Cloud directly, and runs Partner Advantage, its programme for firms that resell and deliver its services. Partner status tells you a firm met Google's programme requirements; it does not tell you who will run your environment. Whoever you appoint, us included, ask:

  • Who does the work, and what do they hold? GCP certifications belong to people, not companies: Cloud Digital Leader, Associate Cloud Engineer, and professional ones such as Professional Cloud Architect. We hire for experience, education and certifications.
  • Whose name is on the organisation, billing account and projects? It should be yours.
  • How would you leave? A move to Microsoft Azure, AWS, private cloud or colocation should need only the documentation you already hold.

Governance, compliance, procurement and continuity

  • Governance: one SLA, with incidents prioritised P1 (critical outage) to P4 (low-impact request) and response and resolution targets agreed to your business impact; a monthly service review and report; documented escalation paths; logged, approved changes; ITIL-aligned practice.
  • Compliance: POPIA addressed through Johannesburg data residency, encryption and access logs; controls aligned with ISO/IEC 27001 and the CIS Controls; King IV Principle 12 and PFMA or MFMA reporting supported by architecture, change and access records kept ready for audit. See King IV and technology governance.
  • Procurement: Level 1 B-BBEE contributor, which gives buyers 135% procurement recognition (sworn affidavit available on request); CSD number, SARS tax compliance status and company documents available on request; SBD forms completed where a bid requires them. Buy through a proposal and SLA, against your purchase order or in response to a tender. See procuring from Arke.
  • Continuity: the organisation, projects, data and credentials are yours; we work through individual, logged accounts, every remote session is approved and logged, and everyone with access is bound by confidentiality. We document as we go, new projects join the SLA as you grow, and exit terms are written in from day one.

Frequently asked questions

What is Google Cloud used for? Show answer

Google Cloud is used to run applications, websites and databases, store files and backups, analyse data and build AI without owning servers. Organisations rent virtual machines, serverless platforms such as Cloud Run, managed databases such as Cloud SQL, storage, BigQuery analytics and Vertex AI, billed by use. It also underpins Firebase, which many mobile and web apps use.

Does Google Cloud have a data centre in South Africa? Show answer

Yes. Google Cloud has run its Johannesburg region, africa-south1, since January 2024, with three zones. Keeping workloads there keeps data in South Africa and close to users, which simplifies POPIA compliance for personal information. Not every Google Cloud product is available in the region, so check each service before you design around it.

How much does Google Cloud cost? Show answer

Google Cloud costs what you use: compute by the second, storage by the gigabyte per month, and data leaving the platform by volume, at list prices in US dollars. Committed-use discounts lower the cost of steady workloads. A small application can cost little; a migrated estate needs a cost model, which we build from measured usage before you commit.

Is Google Cloud the same as Google Drive or Google Photos? Show answer

No. Google Drive and Google Photos share the storage in a Google account, and Drive is part of Google Workspace for organisations. Google Cloud is the infrastructure platform for running systems and storing data at scale, with its own billing. Application data belongs in Google Cloud Storage buckets and databases your organisation owns, not in personal Drive folders.

What is Firebase, and is it part of Google Cloud? Show answer

Yes, Firebase is part of Google Cloud: it is Google's platform for mobile and web apps, and every Firebase project is also a Google Cloud project. It provides Firestore and the Realtime Database, Cloud Storage for Firebase, sign-in, hosting and Firebase Cloud Messaging. It suits apps that need real-time or offline data; heavier relational workloads sit better in Cloud SQL.

Do you need a partner to use Google Cloud? Show answer

No. Any organisation can open a Google Cloud account and pay Google directly. Many appoint a partner because designing, securing and running the platform takes skills they do not keep in-house. Judge a provider on who will do the work, their GCP certifications, whether everything sits in your own organisation and billing account, and how you would leave.
