IT service desk outsourcing
Calls, tickets and requests, run to ITIL-aligned practice. See IT service desk.

IT outsourcing means contracting a specialist firm to run some or all of your IT. As a managed services provider in Johannesburg, Arke Technologies runs service desks, devices, servers, networks and security for South African organisations, public bodies and schools, under one SLA, with a monthly service review and a clean exit.
IT outsourcing is contracting an outside provider to do IT work you would otherwise do in-house, from one function, such as the service desk, to the whole IT department, which is what our managed IT services cover. It works in four moves: you define the scope and service levels; the provider takes over the work with its own people, processes and tools; you pay a predictable fee; and you keep governance, because accountability for IT stays with your executive and board when the work moves.
IT outsourcing is not the same as IT-enabled services. ITES companies use technology to run a business process for you, such as a contact centre, claims processing or payroll; an IT outsourcing company runs the technology itself. Many organisations use both.
IT outsourcing examples include the service desk, device management, server and cloud operations, network monitoring, security monitoring, backup, software development and IT project management. Good IT outsourcing solutions start small, with one or two of these, and grow as the provider earns trust.

A managed services provider (MSP) is a company that runs part or all of a client's IT on an ongoing basis, mostly remotely, under a service-level agreement and for a recurring fee. The definition of managed service provider that matters in a contract is narrower: an MSP is accountable for outcomes measured by the SLA, not for hours worked. The most common kind is the IT MSP, which runs general IT; others specialise in security, cloud or networks.
An MSP holds privileged access to every client, which makes it a target, so ask what makes a secure MSP. In our case: our remote-access platform, built on open-source RustDesk, runs on our own servers in Johannesburg; every remote session is approved and logged; riskier automated repairs need a recorded human approval before they run; and everyone with access to your systems is bound by confidentiality and our security controls.
MSPs run on remote monitoring tools and PSA software for MSPs (professional services automation: tickets, SLA clocks, time and billing). Our own platform, Hesper, covers remote access, monitoring and SLA-clocked ticketing and is built first for our own managed service; it launches for other MSPs and IT teams in November 2026, with early access until then.

| Type | What you buy | Who directs the work | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully managed IT (outsourcing the IT department) | Outcomes across all of IT, under an SLA | The provider, reporting to you | Organisations with no IT team, or replacing one |
| Co-managed IT | Chosen functions, cover or tools beside your team | Shared, by agreement | IT teams that need depth or cover |
| Staff augmentation | Named people for a period | You | Short-term capacity under your own management |
| Project outsourcing | A defined deliverable, such as a migration or a new system | The provider, against a project plan | Change with a clear end, from IT project management outsourcing to custom software development outsourcing |
| Offshore or nearshore outsourcing | Work delivered from another country | The provider | Large, well-documented workloads |
For outsourcing IT development, see custom software development; for strategy and budgets, IT consulting and virtual CIO.
What is staff augmentation? Staff augmentation means bringing in a provider's people to work under your direction for a period, so the meaning of staff augmentation is capacity rather than outcomes. In the staff augmentation model you manage the people, set their priorities and carry the risk if the work goes wrong; the provider supplies and replaces them. Staff augmentation benefits are speed and control: a skill added in weeks, with no permanent hire. Staff augmentation services, whether from IT staff augmentation companies or general agencies, suit a team that already manages its work well and needs more hands.
The difference between managed services and staff augmentation is accountability. With managed services the provider owns the result, measured by the SLA; with staff augmentation you do. We work as a managed services provider, not a staff augmentation company: IT resourcing through us is scoped as a managed service or a project, with the outcome ours.

The pros and cons of outsourcing IT are both real. The benefits of IT outsourcing hold when the contract makes them measurable, and each disadvantage has a remedy:
| Advantages of IT outsourcing | Disadvantages of IT outsourcing, and how we prevent them |
|---|---|
| Predictable monthly cost per user | Scope gaps that become extra charges: the SLA lists inclusions and exclusions, and project work is quoted before it starts |
| A team's breadth instead of one person's knowledge | Lost in-house knowledge: every system, credential and procedure is documented, and the documentation is yours |
| Cover for leave, illness and resignations | Less direct control: you set priorities through the SLA, the P1 to P4 scale and the monthly service review |
| Tools few organisations can justify alone | Third-party access to your systems: every remote session approved and logged, and staff bound by confidentiality |
| Security and compliance practice built in | Lock-in: exit terms, handover support and your ownership of data and credentials written into the contract |

| In-house IT | Outsourced to a managed services provider | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost basis | Salaries, leave cover, training and tools | A monthly fee per user, set in the SLA |
| Market reference | Johannesburg IT support technicians earn about R21,054 a month on average (Indeed, September 2026) | Published managed IT rates run from about R180 to R400 per user per month (matnet.co.za, September 2026) |
| Project work | Staff time or contractors | Quoted per project; published rates for IT project work run from about R550 to R750 an hour ex VAT (matnet.co.za, September 2026) |
| Cover and skills | One or two people's skills and availability | A team, with cover for leave |
| Control | Direct | Through the SLA, reporting and governance |
At those published rates, 60 users would cost R10,800 to R24,000 a month, against about R21,054 for one technician's salary before leave cover, training and tools, and one person cannot hold every skill. We price managed IT per user per month after an assessment and quote projects separately. See managed IT pricing, what managed IT costs and managed IT vs in-house IT.

IT outsourcing countries range from offshore destinations such as India, the Philippines, Poland and Ukraine to nearshore IT in nearby time zones and onshore providers at home. Global managed service providers offer scale; the trade-offs for a South African buyer are time zones, pricing in dollars or euros, travel for on-site work and data protection. POPIA (section 72) allows personal information to leave South Africa only under conditions such as adequate protection in the receiving country, a binding agreement or the data subject's consent, and many public bodies expect data to stay in the country. We deliver from Johannesburg.

MSP companies and IT outsourcing companies look alike on paper. Ask each one:
If you want outsourced IT support near you in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand or the East Rand, our head office is in Greenstone Hill, Edenvale, and we work remote-first, with on-site visits set by your SLA.
Outsourced IT services are IT functions an outside provider runs for you under a contract, such as the service desk, device management, server and cloud operations, network and security monitoring, backup and software development. You define the scope and service levels; the provider supplies the people, processes and tools, and reports against the SLA every month.
Outsourced IT help desk services are a provider's team taking your staff's IT calls, emails and requests, logging each as a ticket, fixing what it can remotely and escalating the rest. A good help desk works to agreed priorities, reports trends monthly and turns recurring problems into permanent fixes. Our IT service desk page explains how we run one.
A managed services provider is accountable for an outcome measured by an SLA, while a staff augmentation company supplies people who work under your direction, so the outcome stays your responsibility. Managed services suit ongoing operations you want off your plate; staff augmentation suits short-term capacity for a team that already manages its own work well.
The main disadvantages of IT outsourcing are less direct control, dependence on the provider, third-party access to your systems and charges for work outside the scope. Each can be managed in the contract: clear exclusions, priorities and reporting, approved and logged remote access, documentation you own, and exit terms that require a proper handover.
IT outsourcing in South Africa is usually priced per user per month, and published managed IT rates run from about R180 to R400 per user per month (matnet.co.za, September 2026). The price depends on the scope, the number of users and sites, on-site needs, security services and reporting. We quote after an assessment, and quote project work separately.
Yes, provided the contract and controls are right. POPIA requires a written agreement under which the provider, as your operator, keeps personal information secure and confidential, and it restricts transfers outside South Africa. Check how remote access is approved and logged, where data is stored and what happens to your data and credentials at exit.
Common examples of IT outsourcing are the service desk, laptop and phone management, server and cloud administration, network monitoring, backup, security monitoring, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace administration, software development, IT project management and hardware supply. Most organisations start with one or two functions and add more once the provider has earned their trust.
