IT strategy and roadmap
A three-year view of what to keep, replace, retire and buy, costed per year and tied to the organisation's plan.

IT consulting helps an organisation decide what technology to run, what it should cost and how to deliver it. Arke Technologies provides IT consulting services across South Africa from Johannesburg: technology strategy and roadmaps, a virtual CIO for your executive team and board, enterprise architecture, and IT project management through to go-live.
An IT consultant assesses how an organisation uses information technology and recommends, plans or leads changes to it. That differs from IT support, which keeps what exists running; a computer IT consultant who only repairs machines is doing support under another name.
Organisations usually bring in IT consulting at a turning point: a new strategy, a board asking about technology risk, an audit finding, a major system to buy, a project in trouble or costs that have grown without a plan. Technical IT consulting answers the engineering questions; business IT consulting services tie the answers to budgets, operating models and governance. We do both, in documents that executives and engineers can both read.

Senior IT leadership as a service: budget, roadmap, vendor contracts, policy and board reporting.
How capabilities, processes, applications, data and infrastructure fit together, and the target state.
Projects and programmes delivered, or a project management office set up and run.

Infrastructure, security, licensing and cost reviews with ranked findings (cybersecurity assessment).

Requirements and evaluation for ERP, CRM, cloud and infrastructure, including systems such as SAP Business One, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, Odoo and NetSuite (ERP implementation).

Business transformation consultancy for organisations changing how they work, not only what they run (digital transformation guide).

A virtual CIO, or vCIO, provides the CIO function to organisations that need its judgement but not a full-time executive: mid-sized organisations, school governing bodies and college councils, municipal ICT steering committees and the IT units of public entities. The role is also sold as a fractional CIO or, for product and engineering leadership, as CTO as a service, which suits a startup building its first platform; the names for these IT consulting roles vary more than the work.
The vCIO prepares the IT strategy and budget for your approval, runs a regular technology review with your executives, manages vendor contracts, keeps the IT risk register, drafts policy and reports to the board in plain language. King IV Principle 12 makes the governing body responsible for technology and information governance, and a vCIO gives it the evidence to discharge that duty (King IV and technology governance); security leadership sits with our virtual CISO.
Our team's experience spans more than a decade of managed IT, enterprise software architecture, cybersecurity and AI integration, including virtual CIO work for several client organisations. Because the vCIO can sit over our managed IT services, IT consulting and managed services come from one accountable team, and the roadmap is run by the people who wrote it.

Enterprise architecture (EA), which practitioners shorten to "enterprise arch", describes how an organisation's business, information, applications and technology fit together, now and in the target state. So what is an enterprise architect? It is the role that keeps that picture current, judges each project against it and stops the organisation buying three systems that do the same job.
Business architecture is the business layer of that picture: capabilities, value streams and processes. Business IT architecture maps each capability to the applications, data and infrastructure that serve it, which is where duplication and gaps show up.
An EA framework such as TOGAF or the Zachman Framework gives the work a shared vocabulary, but an architecture framework is a means, not a deliverable: enterprise architecting in a mid-sized organisation or a municipality needs a current-state map, a target state, principles and a roadmap. Enterprise architect software can come later; an ArchiMate model in the free, open-source Archi tool, or diagrams in Microsoft 365, is enough to begin.

Project management in IT is the discipline of delivering technology change, such as a new system, a migration or a network rollout, to an agreed scope, budget and date, with risks controlled and benefits measured. Its importance shows in what it prevents: scope creep, unfunded change, missed cutovers and systems nobody uses. The benefits of IT project management are a date the business can plan around, a budget that holds and a system people adopt.
There are three main types of IT project management method:
| Method | How it works | Suits | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Predictive (waterfall, PRINCE2-style) | Requirements fixed up front, then staged delivery through approval gates | Infrastructure projects, migrations and bids with fixed specifications | Needs that change after sign-off |
| Agile IT project management (Scrum or Kanban) | Short cycles that deliver working increments, with priorities reset each cycle | Software, integrations and anything where needs emerge as users see the product | An engaged business owner, and a harder fixed price |
| Hybrid | Fixed milestones and budget, with agile delivery inside each stage | Most enterprise and public-sector programmes | Clear rules on what may change, and who decides |
IT project management methodologies matter less than discipline. On every project the core IT project management tasks are the same: a signed scope, a milestone plan, a RAID log of risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies, a budget tracked against actuals, change requests approved before work starts, regular status reports and a benefits check after go-live.
For larger portfolios we set up and run an IT project management office (PMO) that prioritises IT projects across the organisation, standardises reporting and gives executives one view of delivery. Tools for IT project management matter less than how they are used; we work in the IT project management software you already have, such as Microsoft Planner or Project. Our IT project management services cover Windows Server upgrades, Microsoft 365 migrations, ERP implementations and multi-site network rollouts.
Our IT consulting process has six steps, and the written outputs are yours to keep:
01.
What prompted the question, who decides and by when.
02.
Questions, deliverables, timeline and fee, in writing, before work starts.
03.
Interviews, documents and systems: what you run, what it costs and how it is serviced and supported.
04.
Ranked findings and two or three options, each with its cost, risk and effort.
05.
The chosen option, phased across financial years, ready for your executive, board or council.
06.
We manage delivery, or hand the plan to your team or another provider.

Plans that fit the PFMA or MFMA budget cycle and survive audit (IT for the public sector).

A device, network and platform plan that governing bodies can fund across years (IT for education).

IT consulting for healthcare starts with POPIA, which treats health information as special personal information (IT for healthcare).

A second opinion, or strategy capacity for IT directors, without adding headcount (enterprise IT services).

published hourly rates for IT project work in South Africa (matnet.co.za, September 2026)
IT consulting is quoted per engagement against a written scope, so you know the fee before work starts. The price depends on the questions to be answered, the sites and systems involved, and the deliverables. A virtual CIO can be part of a managed IT agreement or engaged on its own. Last reviewed: September 2026.
IT consulting companies in South Africa range from global firms to independent consultants. Look past IT consulting websites and ask each one what exactly you will receive, who will do the work and what they have delivered before, how they handle a conflict of interest, and whether they can deliver their plan or hand it over (how to choose an IT company). An IT consultancy near you matters less than one that knows South African procurement, POPIA and load-shedding.

An IT consultant assesses how an organisation uses technology and recommends, plans or leads the changes it needs, from a strategy or a system selection to an architecture or a project. Unlike IT support, which keeps existing systems running, consulting decides what should change, what it will cost and how the risk is controlled.
A virtual CIO (vCIO) provides the CIO function part-time, as a service: IT strategy, budget, vendor management, policy and board reporting. It suits organisations that need senior IT judgement but not a full-time executive, and works best alongside a managed IT service that carries out the plan, so advice and delivery stay connected.
Project management in IT is the discipline of delivering technology change, such as a system implementation, a migration or a network rollout, to an agreed scope, budget and date. It covers planning, risk and issue management, change control, stakeholder reporting and a check that the promised benefits arrive, so projects finish on time and are used.
Use agile where requirements will emerge as users see the product, as in software and integration work, and a predictive, waterfall approach where the scope is fixed, as in infrastructure projects and tenders. Most enterprise and public-sector programmes end up hybrid: fixed milestones and budget, with agile delivery inside each stage.
IT consulting in South Africa is priced per hour or per defined engagement: published hourly rates for IT project work run from about R550 to R750 ex VAT (matnet.co.za, September 2026). We quote each engagement against a written scope, so the fee is known before work starts and depends on the questions, systems and deliverables involved.
Both, if technology change is continuous: train your own people for the long term, and bring in a consultant for a project that cannot wait. A Master of IT Project Management, an MSc or an MBA with an IT project management focus builds future leaders; an introduction to IT project management course, or shorter training, gives a team a shared vocabulary. A consultant brings a working method now, then hands it over.
Tell us what you need to decide, and by when. We will propose a scope, deliverables and a fee in writing; we aim to respond to new enquiries within one business day.
