Managed security services: detection and response under one SLA

Managed security services put an accountable team in charge of detecting, investigating and containing threats across your identities, devices, email and cloud. Arke Technologies, in Johannesburg, delivers managed detection and response (MDR) for organisations across South Africa on Microsoft Sentinel and Defender, with continuous automated monitoring, SLA-bound human response and monthly reporting.

What managed security services are

Managed security services are security operations delivered by an outside team under contract: monitoring, detection, investigation, response, vulnerability management and reporting. A managed security service provider (MSSP) runs the tools and the process, so you gain a security operations capability without building one.

In one line, a managed security service provider is the company accountable for watching your environment for attacks and acting when it finds one. The definition has widened. Older MSSPs mostly managed firewalls and forwarded alerts; managed detection and response goes further, investigating each alert, containing confirmed threats and explaining what happened.

MSP and MSSP, compared: a managed service provider (MSP) keeps IT running, and an MSSP keeps it secure. We deliver managed IT services and managed security under one contract, so IT operations and IT security answer to one accountable team, within our wider cybersecurity services.

SIEM, EDR and the SOC: how detection works

  • SIEM

Security information and event management (also written security event and information management, or security incident and event management) collects logs from identities, devices, firewalls, email and cloud services, correlates them and raises an incident when a pattern looks like an attack. An untuned security information and event management system produces noise, not detection.

  • EDR

Endpoint detection and response watches process behaviour on every laptop and server, blocks known malware and can isolate a device once an attack is confirmed. Paired with web and email filtering, EDR covers the routes most attacks use.

  • The SOC

A security operations centre, or security ops centre (SOC), is the team and process that run the SIEM and EDR: triage, investigation, response and reporting. SOC services are increasingly bought rather than built, and "SOC as a service" and MDR now describe much the same thing.

  • SOC and NOC

A network operations centre watches availability; a SOC watches for attackers, and "SOC network" searches often mix the two. Our managed service covers both: security detection here, and availability through network monitoring.

  • Cyber threat intelligence

Known-bad addresses, domains, file hashes and attacker techniques. Microsoft's threat intelligence flows into Sentinel and Defender, and we map detections to MITRE ATT&CK so each alert names the technique it caught.

Cybersecurity threat management ties these together, so every real alert reaches a person who can act.

Microsoft Sentinel and Defender: the platform we run

Microsoft Sentinel, formerly Azure Sentinel and often called MS Sentinel, is Microsoft's cloud-native SIEM with built-in automation, running in Azure. For Microsoft 365 organisations, Microsoft Defender and Sentinel together are a practical start, because many already license much of Defender: it protects endpoints, email, identities and cloud apps, and Sentinel correlates its alerts with everything else. Microsoft Sentinel SIEM is the natural Azure SIEM for most Microsoft estates.

Sentinel also takes logs from firewalls, Linux and Windows servers, Google Workspace and AWS, so one Microsoft SIEM can cover a mixed estate. We connect AWS CloudTrail and other AWS logs to the same workspace, so an AWS-heavy estate gets the same SOC view as a Microsoft one.

Our team has deployed Microsoft Sentinel as the SIEM for several client organisations in South Africa, alongside Microsoft 365 hardening and Entra ID governance; see managed security operations. Sentinel MDR from Arke means we build and tune the analytics rules and playbooks, and respond to what they find. The workspace can be created in a Microsoft Azure region in South Africa, inside your own tenant, so your logs are stored in the country and remain yours.

Microsoft Sentinel pricing: what drives the bill

Microsoft Sentinel pricing, like Azure Sentinel pricing before the rename, depends on how much data you ingest and how long you keep it, billed by Microsoft to your Azure subscription. The drivers:

  • Data volume. Noisy sources such as firewalls and domain controllers create most of the cost, so we filter and tier logs.
  • Free sources. Some Microsoft 365 and Defender data can be ingested at no charge, so we connect those first.
  • Commitment tiers. Above a steady daily volume, a commitment tier costs less than pay-as-you-go.
  • Retention. Keep what your auditors and POPIA retention schedule require, in cheaper archive tiers where possible.

We forecast the Sentinel bill before you commit and report actual consumption every month.

How detection and response works day to day

  1. Detect

Analytics rules, Defender alerts and threat intelligence raise incidents automatically and continuously.

  2. Triage

Our security team reviews each incident, closes false positives and ranks the rest by severity.

  3. Investigate

We trace which account, device and data were involved. Cyber investigation at this stage separates incidents from noise.

  4. Contain

Agreed actions, such as isolating a device, disabling an account, revoking sessions or blocking a sender, run from documented runbooks. You decide in advance which actions need your approval, and every action is logged.

  5. Escalate

Your named contacts hear from us according to the severity matrix in your SLA. Incidents are prioritised from P1 (critical, such as an outage or a confirmed compromise) to P4 (a low-impact request), with response and resolution targets matched to the business impact and agreed in your SLA. Out-of-hours and weekend cover is set in the same SLA, to suit your needs.

  6. Recover and learn

We restore service, close the root cause and record the lessons. A major breach moves to our incident response and digital forensics service.

Detection is automated and continuous; human response follows your SLA. If your risk profile calls for human cover beyond business hours, we say so before you sign and write it into the SLA.

SOC reports: SOC 1, SOC 2 and SOC 3 explained

"SOC" has a second meaning in audit and procurement. SOC reports are independent auditors' reports on a service provider's controls, issued under standards from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). You will also see them written as SOC I and SOC II in some documents.

ReportWhat it coversWho reads it
SOC 1Controls relevant to your financial reportingYour external auditors
SOC 2Controls for security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacySecurity, risk and procurement teams, usually under a non-disclosure agreement
SOC 3A public summary of a SOC 2Anyone

A SOC audit comes in two types: Type 1 reports on whether controls are designed properly at a point in time, and Type 2 on whether they operated effectively over a period, commonly six to twelve months. That is why SOC 2 Type 2 reports carry the most weight and a SOC 2 Type 2 audit takes the longest. SOC 1 and SOC 2 compliance is evidenced by these audit reports, not by a certificate.

ISO 27001 and SOC 2 overlap: ISO/IEC 27001 certifies a management system, while SOC 2 attests to specific controls. Microsoft and AWS publish SOC 1, SOC 2 and SOC 3 reports, so AWS SOC compliance can be evidenced from their trust portals; we help you map them. Arke Technologies aligns its own controls with ISO/IEC 27001 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and documents them for your auditors. We are not ISO 27001 certified, and we claim no SOC attestation.

How to choose a managed security service provider

Lists of top MSSP companies and MSSP providers are easy to find. Analyst research from Gartner, such as its Magic Quadrant and Market Guide reports, profiles large international MDR and managed security services providers. Then test any shortlist, us included:

  • Scope. Which sources are monitored: identities, endpoints, email, cloud, firewalls, servers?
  • Response. Will the provider contain a threat, or only email you about it?
  • Hours and targets. Are cover and response targets written into the SLA and reported monthly?
  • Authority. Which actions can the provider take without asking, and is every action logged?
  • Data residency and POPIA. Where are logs stored, who can see them, and is there a written operator agreement?
  • Ownership and exit. Do you keep the SIEM workspace, the rules and the logs if you leave?
  • Assurance. Which independent reports cover the provider and its platforms, and which controls are aligned rather than certified?

Whatever a provider calls its offer, these questions separate a cyber MSSP that responds from one that only forwards alerts.

Governance, compliance and procurement

  • Reporting. A monthly service review and report: incidents by severity, response against target, open vulnerabilities, Sentinel consumption and agreed actions. Every critical incident gets a written report.
  • Escalation and change control. A named service lead, documented escalation paths and runbooks, and detection changes made under change control.
  • POPIA. A compromise of personal information must be reported to the Information Regulator and to the people affected under section 22, as soon as reasonably possible. Our incident records give your Information Officer the facts. See POPIA compliance.
  • King IV, PFMA and MFMA. Reporting maps to King IV Principle 12 and gives accounting officers evidence for the Auditor-General; see cybersecurity for government, municipalities and SOEs.
  • Procurement. Arke Technologies (Pty) Ltd is a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor (sworn affidavit available on request). Company documents, our CSD supplier number and SARS tax compliance status are available on request, and we complete SBD forms when a bid requires them. The service is bought through an assessment, a proposal and an SLA, against your purchase order or tender.
  • Continuity and exit. The workspace, rules, playbooks and logs live in your tenant. You own your data, credentials and documentation, and at exit we hand over the runbooks and rule library.

What managed security services cost

We price managed security services after an assessment, billed monthly in advance under your SLA. Microsoft licences and Sentinel consumption are billed separately and shown as they are. The drivers are users and devices, log sources and volumes, hours of cover, the scope of containment and log retention.

For context, published South African managed IT rates run from about R180 to R400 per user per month (matnet.co.za, September 2026). Managed security is scoped separately, and it is the fastest-growing segment of South African IT services, forecast to grow at 14.2% a year (Mordor Intelligence).

Frequently asked questions

What is a managed security service provider? Show answer

A managed security service provider (MSSP) is a company that runs security operations for you under contract: monitoring logs and alerts, investigating incidents, containing threats and reporting. You gain a security operations capability without hiring and retaining a full in-house team. Arke Technologies delivers managed security services alongside managed IT, so one accountable team covers both.

What is MDR in cyber security? Show answer

MDR, or managed detection and response, is a managed security service that goes beyond alerting: the provider investigates each alert, confirms whether it is a real threat, contains it and explains what happened. It typically combines EDR on every device, a SIEM such as Microsoft Sentinel, threat intelligence and a response process written into an SLA.

Is Microsoft Sentinel a SIEM? Show answer

Yes, Microsoft Sentinel is a cloud-native SIEM (security information and event management) with built-in automation, running in Azure; it was called Azure Sentinel until Microsoft renamed it. It correlates logs from Microsoft 365, Defender, Azure, AWS, firewalls and servers, and its cost depends mainly on data ingested and retained.

Do you monitor our systems around the clock? Show answer

Our automated detection runs continuously; human response follows the hours and targets in your SLA. Incidents are prioritised from P1 (critical) to P4 (low impact); the response and resolution targets for each priority, and any out-of-hours and weekend cover, are agreed in your SLA to match what downtime costs your business. Because both are written down, nobody is guessing during an incident.

What is the difference between SOC 1 and SOC 2 reports? Show answer

A SOC 1 report covers a service provider's controls that affect its clients' financial reporting, and your auditors read it. A SOC 2 report covers controls for security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy, and security and procurement teams read it. Both come as Type 1, covering design at a point in time, or Type 2, covering operation over a period.

How much do managed security services cost in South Africa? Show answer

Managed security services are usually priced per user or per device per month, plus the platform's own consumption charges. We set the price after an assessment, based on users, devices, log volumes, hours of cover and response scope. For context, published managed IT rates run from about R180 to R400 per user per month (matnet.co.za, September 2026); security is scoped separately.
