IT services for small business and growing teams

Arke Technologies provides IT services for small business across South Africa from Johannesburg: a support line, managed devices, security, backup, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace licences and connectivity, under one contract and a written service-level agreement. Support is priced per user per month, so SMEs and startups get an IT department without the hire.

What IT services does a small business need?

The best IT solutions for small businesses are rarely exotic. Most small companies need the same six things done properly, and IT trouble in a small office usually starts where one of them was left to chance. We deliver all six as part of our managed IT services.

  • Accounts, email and files. Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, licensed monthly or annually, with multi-factor authentication and file permissions that match how the team works.
  • Devices. Windows and Mac computers built to one standard, updated, encrypted and listed in an asset register.
  • Security. Endpoint protection, email filtering and security awareness training, so staff recognise a phishing message.
  • Backup. Files and mailboxes copied off the device, with restores tested rather than assumed. More in backup and disaster recovery.
  • Connectivity. Business fibre or fixed LTE, and Wi-Fi that reaches every desk.
  • Someone to call. A support line that answers, fixes the problem and records what it did.

Freelance IT solutions, an in-house hire or managed IT services for small business

There are three common ways to get IT support for small business. Each can work, and each fails in a different place.

Freelance technician (break-fix)In-house IT personManaged IT services
How you payPer call-out or per hour; published rates for IT project work run from about R550 to R750 an hour ex VAT (matnet.co.za, September 2026)A salary; IT support technicians in Johannesburg earn about R21,054 a month on average (Indeed, September 2026), before leave, training and toolsA fixed fee per user per month; published South African rates run from about R180 to R400 (matnet.co.za, September 2026), with some providers listing R450 (MiBOT, September 2026)
Who watches the systemsNobody, between visitsOne person, in working hoursAutomated monitoring every 15 minutes, and a team working to an SLA
Cover for leave and illnessNoneNone, unless you hire twiceBuilt in
Passwords and documentationOften in the freelancer's headOften in one employee's headWritten down and owned by you
Works best forOccasional, simple fixesLarger teams with daily hands-on needsTeams that need reliable IT without running an IT department

At published market rates, managing 20 users costs about R3,600 to R9,000 a month, less than half one technician's average salary, and the fee buys a team rather than one person. Freelance IT solutions remain sensible for a two-person business with simple needs, and if that describes you, we will say so.

What our managed IT services for small businesses include

Managed IT services for small businesses from Arke run on the same tooling and service disciplines as our larger contracts, scaled to your team.

  • A support line that answers

Call 010 447 2445 or email support@arketechnologies.com, Monday to Friday 08:00–17:00 and Saturday 09:00–13:00 (SAST). Fixes happen remotely where possible, on our own platform built on open-source RustDesk, and every session is approved and logged. See remote IT support.

  • Monitoring that raises its own tickets

Every computer is checked every 15 minutes, and faults become tickets whether or not anyone reports them.

  • Standard repairs, with a human check

Routine fixes come from a library of standard repairs; riskier ones need a recorded human approval first.

  • Licences and accounts

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace licences, monthly or annual, supplied and administered by us, joiners and leavers included.

IT infrastructure for small business and startups

IT services for startups work best when the foundations are laid in the company's name from the first hire: a domain and email tenant owned by the business rather than a founder's personal account, administrator credentials that more than one person can reach, and one standard build for every laptop.

Most young businesses do not need a server. Cloud email, file storage and accounting cover the first stage; a server earns its place when a workload needs it, such as a line-of-business database or large design files that sync slowly. When that point comes, we size the hardware and supply it through Server Hub.

Good IT infrastructure for small business also plans for load-shedding: backup power for the router and critical equipment, an LTE line as a backup to fibre, and backups that do not depend on the office having power. For the wider picture, see IT for small and medium businesses.

What managed IT services for small business cost

  • R180–R400

published managed IT rates per user per month (matnet.co.za, September 2026)

  • R450

    upper listings (MiBOT, September 2026)

  • R21,054

average monthly pay for a Johannesburg IT support technician (Indeed, September 2026)

Our managed IT for small businesses is priced per user (seat) per month, set after an assessment and billed monthly in advance by debit order. Work outside the SLA, such as an office move or a migration, is quoted per project before it starts. The price depends on:

  • the number of users and devices;

  • whether you run servers or line-of-business applications;

  • how often someone needs to be on site;

  • security and compliance needs, such as a large client's supplier audit;

  • the hours of cover; out-of-hours and weekend cover is available by agreement and set in your SLA.

Risks small businesses carry, and how we reduce them

Small businesses rarely lose their IT to one big mistake. It is usually a password only one person knows, or a backup nobody checked.

RiskHow we reduce it
One person holds every passwordCredentials documented and held in the business's name; you own them
Ransomware or a phished accountMulti-factor authentication, endpoint protection, email filtering and backups held apart from the devices they protect
A lost or stolen laptopEncrypted disks and remote wipe through device management
Lapsed or grey-market licencesGenuine Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace licences from us, tracked against renewals
Customer or staff records exposedAccess controls and logged remote sessions that support your POPIA obligations
Load-shedding takes the office offlineBackup power, an LTE backup line and cloud-first working

Governance, POPIA and procurement, sized for an SME

A small business still needs to know what it is paying for, and sometimes to prove it to a bank, an auditor or a large customer's supplier-vetting team.

  • A written SLA. Scope, response and resolution times, exclusions, on-site policy, price per seat and term, agreed before work starts.
  • A monthly service review. A short report on tickets, security, updates and backups, and a conversation about what should change.
  • POPIA support. Access to customer and staff records is controlled, every remote session is logged, and our Information Officer is designated under PAIA and POPIA.
  • Procurement documents. Arke is a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor (sworn affidavit available on request), which gives buyers 135% procurement recognition. Company documents, our CSD supplier number and tax compliance status are available on request.
  • A clean exit. Your data, credentials and documentation are yours, and we hand them over if you leave.

How to choose the best IT support for small businesses

When you compare any IT company for small business, including us, ask the questions below. Our guide to choosing an IT company in South Africa goes further.

  • Is the SLA written, with response and resolution times, and what does it exclude?
  • Who holds the administrator accounts, and will you get them if you leave?
  • How are remote sessions approved and recorded?
  • What does the monthly report show?
  • How is work outside the contract priced?
  • Can one provider handle hardware, licences and connectivity, or will you manage three suppliers?

How we start

Frequently asked questions

What are the best IT solutions for small businesses? Show answer

The best IT solutions for small businesses are the basics done properly: Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace with multi-factor authentication, managed and encrypted devices, endpoint protection, tested backups, reliable connectivity and a support line bound by a written SLA. These cover most day-to-day risk; specialist systems come later, when a workload needs them.

How much do managed IT services cost for a small business? Show answer

Published South African rates run from about R180 to R400 per user per month (matnet.co.za, September 2026), with some providers listing R450 (MiBOT, September 2026). We quote per user per month after an assessment, because servers, on-site needs and compliance requirements change the price. Project work is quoted separately.

Is managed IT worth it for a small team? Show answer

For most teams that rely on email, shared files and customer data every day, yes. At published market rates, managing 20 users costs well under the R21,054 average monthly pay of one Johannesburg IT support technician (Indeed, September 2026), and adds monitoring, documentation and leave cover. A very small team with simple needs may manage with occasional help.

What is the difference between a freelance IT technician and managed IT? Show answer

A freelance technician is paid to fix problems when you call; a managed IT provider is paid a fixed monthly fee to prevent problems and fix them within a written SLA. Freelance IT solutions suit occasional, simple needs. Managed IT adds continuous monitoring, documentation, security and a team that covers leave.

Do you offer IT services for startups? Show answer

Yes. For startups we set up the domain, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, device standards and security from the first hire, so the business owns its accounts from day one. The same set-up grows into a full managed IT agreement as you add people, offices or customers who audit their suppliers.

Can you support a small business outside Johannesburg? Show answer

Yes. A business in Cape Town, Durban or Polokwane gets the same support line, monitoring and service as one near our Greenstone Hill office. We work with organisations across South Africa.
