Website development and web applications for South African organisations

Website development is the design and build of the sites and browser-based applications an organisation runs on. Arke Technologies, a web development company in Johannesburg, builds business websites, portals and web applications for organisations, public bodies and schools across South Africa, covering UX and UI design, front end, back end, testing and hosting.

Websites and web applications: what is the difference?

A business website tells people who you are and what you do, and turns visitors into enquiries. A web application does work: people sign in, enter data, approve requests and run reports, all in the browser. Many organisations need both, and the line blurs once a website gains a client portal, an online application form or a tender-document library.

Web application development (procurement documents often say "development of web-based applications") suits processes that many people across many sites must use without installing anything: staff portals, case and permit management, bookings, learner and parent portals, supplier onboarding and reporting dashboards. Because the software runs on the server, one release updates every user at once. Making a web app is therefore closer to building software than to laying out pages.

Choosing how to build it

The build approach should follow the job the site must do.

ApproachSuitsStrengthsWatch for
Website building apps and drag-and-drop buildersA small brochure siteQuick and cheap to startLimited integration, performance and data control
WordPress with a custom themeContent-led business websites that staff update oftenFamiliar editing; wide plug-in choicePlug-ins need patching; hosting and security need a routine

Where a WordPress site with a well-made theme would serve you better than a custom build, we will say so, and we can host it on web servers we manage. See website and email hosting. If you already run Ruby on Rails software, an older PHP system or a Python Django web app, we assess it before recommending a rebuild; a staged approach through legacy system modernisation often costs less.

Front end and back end web development, explained

Every web application has two halves. The front end (or frontend) is what runs in the browser: the pages, forms and interactions people see. Front end development uses HTML, CSS and JavaScript or TypeScript, usually with a framework such as React. The back end (or backend) is what runs on the server: the business rules, the database, sign-in and the APIs other systems call. Backend web development uses languages such as TypeScript on Node.js or Python, with a database such as PostgreSQL.

An API (application programming interface) is the contract between the two halves, and between your system and others. A well-designed API lets the same back end serve the website, a mobile app and your ERP, which is why we design it before the screens. Python makes a strong website backend for data-heavy work, but front end development with Python is rare: browsers run JavaScript, so Python belongs on the server.

Website development services we provide

  • UX and UI design

Designing the journeys before the pages: research, wireframes and a design system. UX decides whether the site works for people; UI decides how it looks and feels. Public bodies should specify an accessibility standard (WCAG 2.2 level AA is the usual target), and we design and test to the level your specification sets.

  • Business websites

Fast, accessible sites where your name, tagline and offer are clear on the first screen, with technical SEO built in (clean URLs, structured data, sitemaps, quick pages) and forms that route enquiries to the right inbox or CRM.

Web platforms our team has built

How we deliver a website or web application

  1. Discovery

Goals, users, content, integrations and compliance needs, written up as a scoped proposal, with our suggestions on structure and content.

  2. UX and UI design

Rapid wireframes and a clickable prototype, tested with real users before build.

  3. Architecture

The data model, the APIs and hosting (South African cloud regions or our own servers in Johannesburg), decided and documented first.

  4. Build and test

Iterative releases to a test environment you can use; automated tests, cross-browser checks and an OWASP-aligned security review, with a penetration test where the risk warrants it.

  5. Launch

Redirects from the old site, analytics, performance checks and training for your editors and administrators.

  6. Support

Patching, monitoring and improvements under an SLA, with a monthly service review and report.

Governance, compliance and procurement

  • Governance and reporting. A named lead, a risk and issue log, written change control and status reports at an agreed cadence.
  • POPIA. Privacy notices, cookie consent, secure forms, data minimisation and retention rules, so each form collects only what it needs. See our POPIA compliance checklist.
  • Public sector. Accessible, audit-ready sites and portals for departments, entities and municipalities, delivered to PFMA and MFMA disciplines. See IT for municipalities.
  • Procurement. Arke Technologies (Pty) Ltd is a Level 1 B-BBEE contributor (sworn affidavit available on request); company documents, our CSD supplier number and SARS tax compliance status are available on request, and we complete standard bidding documents when a bid requires them. Buy through a proposal and purchase order or a tender response, with hosting and support under their own SLA.
  • Continuity. You own your domain, data, credentials, content and documentation, and the code is handed over at exit.

Choosing a web development company: local or offshore

Buyers comparing website developers in South Africa with an offshore web development company in Kochi or Lahore may find lower rates abroad. The trade-offs are time zones, POPIA's conditions on sending personal information across borders (section 72), and who answers when the site fails at month end. We are a website development company in Johannesburg, based at Greenstone Hill, working remote-first for organisations in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. Whether you are shortlisting web developers in Cape Town, web designers and web design companies in Durban, or web development companies in Johannesburg, ask each for a working reference system, its security practice and its exit terms. Our custom software development page sets out how we work on larger builds.

Frequently asked questions

What does a web development company do? Show answer

A web development company designs, builds, tests and supports websites and web applications. The work runs from UX and UI design through front end and back end development, integration with other systems, security testing and hosting, to support after launch. A good one also writes down who owns the domain, the code and the content before work starts.

What is the difference between front end and back end development? Show answer

Front end development builds what runs in the browser: pages, forms and interactions. Back end development builds what runs on the server: business rules, the database, sign-in and APIs. Full-stack developers work across both, and most web applications need both done well, because a polished front end on a weak back end fails under real use.

What is an API in web development? Show answer

An API, or application programming interface, is a defined way for one piece of software to request data or actions from another. In web development, the front end calls the back end's API, and the back end calls other systems' APIs, such as a payment gateway or an ERP. A well-designed API lets one back end serve a website, a mobile app and other organisations' systems.

Is web development the same as app development? Show answer

They overlap but differ. Web development produces sites and applications that run in a browser on any device and update centrally. App development produces software installed from the Apple App Store or Google Play, with deeper access to the phone's camera, location and offline storage. Many projects need both on one shared back end; see mobile app development.

Should we choose WordPress or a custom-built website? Show answer

Choose WordPress when the site is mainly content that staff update often and the integrations are simple. Choose a custom build when the site is really an application, with sign-ins, workflows, personal data, integrations or heavy traffic. Either way, budget for patching, hosting and security, because an unmaintained website is an open door for attackers.

How much does website development cost in South Africa? Show answer

Website development costs depend on the number of page templates, the content to migrate, integrations, sign-in and personal data, accessibility requirements and the support you need after launch. A brochure site and a citizen portal sit in very different brackets. We do not publish rates; we quote in writing after discovery. See app and software development cost in South Africa.

What is the difference between UI and UX? Show answer

UX (user experience) is whether the site works for the people using it: the journeys, the structure and how quickly someone completes a task. UI (user interface) is the visual layer: layout, type, colour and components. UX and UI design go together, but UX comes first, because a handsome interface on a confusing journey still loses users.
